The Professional Team, Work-Style, and Program

An interdisciplinary, inter-faculty team at the University of Miami will research the crucial link between economy and environment. The principle investigator, Prof. Weisskoff, is a Harvard-trained development economist who has worked in Latin America and the Caribbean for 30 years. Prof. Daniel Suman of the Marine Affairs and Policy Division of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS), Ph.D. and JDS, specializes in the legal and scientific ramifications on the environment in Latin America. Prof. Solo-Gabriele is an MIT-trained environmental engineer with the College of Engineering who specializes in water quality and industrial processes.

Professor Richard Weisskoff (Principal Investigator): Associate Professor of Economics in the Department of International Studies. He has carried out extensive research on income distribution and poverty in Latin America, and he has designed and researched the application of complex economic models to test the impact of development strategies on income distribution, employment, and environment in Latin America. Professor Weisskoff has pioneered in applying "impact analysis" and regional growth models to issues in the environment, for example, the U.S. Army Corps' $8 billion spending on Everglades restoration. He has created the Everglades Economics Program at the School of International Studies. Prof. Richard Weisskoff is a veteran of missions with the Interamerican Development Bank (IADB), the Harvard Institute for International Development (HIID), and the United Nations. He is fluent in Spanish & Portuguese. Click here to view Dr. Wiesskoff's bio and here to view his Everglades Economics website. Contact Dr. Weisskoff by email rwecon@gate.net.

Prof. Daniel 0. Suman: Associate Professor Marine Affairs (regulation of marine pollution, coastal zone management, marine and environmental law and policy, creation and management of marine protected areas, science and technology in Latin America). He has 25 years of field experience working on environmental policy in U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean. He is an expert on coastal systems and is bilingual Dr. Suman conducts research on the adaptability of the fishing sectors in Chile, Peru, and Ecuador to ENSO ("El Niño") climate variability. This research involves analyses of changing positions of industrial fishing companies and labor unions, artisanal fishing unions, and government regulators in light of environmental uncertainty. Suman also has long-standing research interests in mangrove management in Latin American and Caribbean countries. He has organized international training workshops for mangrove managers and analyzed mangrove-related legislation in the Americas. He edited a volume in Spanish that details mangrove management strategies in numerous Latin American countries: El Ecosistema del Manglar en América Latina y la Cuenca del Caribe: Su Manejo Conservación. Prof. Helena Solo-Gabriele: Her research focuses on finding water and contaminant sources. She is an expert in water and wood contaminants. Prof. Solo-Gabriele's favorite types of water bodies include surface waters (e.g. rivers and lakes); however, she investigates ground waters when they are considered a significant contributor to the surface water body of interest. She studies metals and microbial contaminants, and has investigated microbial contaminant indicators, such as E. coli, enterococci, C. perfringens, Cryptosporidium, and Giardia. Her interest in metals has also led to research and experience in investigating the environmental impacts of metals in pressure-treated wood, in particular wood treated with chromated copper arsenate. Dr. Solo-Gabriele teaches courses in the analysis of water and wastewater, environmental microbiology, and in the design of water and wastewater treatment plants. Prof. Solo-Gabriele has experience in Honduras and is bilingual. Specifically she has evaluate both the potable water and wastewater disposal systems for the City of San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
